Spicy, strong and pungent notes roaming in the air — yup, that’s ginger alright! While ginger in spice form is the essence of the intoxicating aromas in Thai and Indian dishes, it’s equally as popular as an essential oil, referred to as ginger oil.
If you’re an essential oil fanatic, adding ginger to your list of best essentials oils is a must. In fact, ginger oil has anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce nausea (source), making ginger oil one of my favorite essentials oils to travel with.
Ginger itself is so versatile; it can be used for aromatherapy, topically or ingested. There’s ginger root, ginger powder, and ginger essential oil. If you’re using it in oil form, make sure to properly dilute your oil in a carrier oil like jojoba oil, almond oil, coconut oil, etc.
In particular, here are some of the best ways to use ginger root oil at-home or while traveling.
How is ginger oil made
In a similar manner to the process of other essential oils, ginger oil is made by extracting the sap from a ginger plant, Zingiber Officinale, via the root system. It comes from the same plant family, Zingiberaceae, as cardamom and turmeric.
It’s created through a distillation process, resulting in a highly concentrated oil. (source)
In addition, the ginger plant is readily found throughout Asia and Africa. Some countries that have an abundance of ginger include China, Thailand, Nigeria, Indonesia, and Nepal.
Does ginger oil work
While benefits of ginger oil are dependent upon the user since we each have different bodies, research suggest it can help in the following ways:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Migraines relief (click here for tips on pain relief)
- Reducing nausea
- Promotes respiratory function
- Colds
- Rich in antioxidants
- Helps with fatigue
- Uplifts your mood
Where to buy the oil
If you’re interested in buying ginger oil, a brand I highly recommend trying is Rocky Mountain Oils. Their products are easy to travel with as they have specialty essential blend kits like chakra blends and everyday essential oils packs, making it easier to have all your go-to essential oils in one place.
But if you’re in a pinch and need it asap, visit your local health food store (i.e. Sprouts, Whole Foods) to pick some up.
What does ginger oil help with
Because ginger oil has powerful natural properties, there are numerous ways to add it into your wellness routine. However, before you begin incorporating this oil, always make sure to properly dilute it with a carrier oil first.
There’s coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, etc. Just find a light oil your skin enjoys, and add your ginger oil to it.
Here’s a pack from Rocky Mountain Oils that comes with all three oils to help you find which one you like best.
Here are some of my favorite ways to use ginger while traveling. Please keep in mind, I’m not a doctor. These are the personal ways I’ve found this oil helps, so always consult with your doctor for questions.
1. Relief from tummy woes
First off, sorry if you’re having stubborn tummy woes! Ginger oil is always the first thing I add to my cross contamination kit for some instant relief as a traveler with food allergies. Dilute the oil first, then rub it on gently onto your stomach.
2. Helps with motion sickness
Similar to tummy woes, I’ve found when ginger oil is applied to the stomach or around the wrist, motion sickness seems to subside. Again, dilute the oil, then rub it onto your tummy or onto the inside of your wrist.
Essential oil tip: Some essential oils do come as roll on, which are already diluted. If you’re traveling, I highly suggest buying roll on essential oils since it’s easy to apply the oil.
3. Room freshener
Ginger is an excellent natural room freshener. If the space — Airbnb (here’s a coupon up to $65 OFF), living room, bedroom, hotel room– needs a quick pick me up, grab a small spray bottle, fill it up with water, and then add some drops of oil. The more you add, the stronger the smell.
4. Add ginger oil to a diffuser
Grab that beautiful diffuser, fill it up with water, and then top if off with a couple drops of ginger essential oil. Afterward, plug it in, then place it in the room you’re wanting to freshen and uplift.
5. Add it to your shampoo or conditioner
Adding ginger oil is an excellent way to level up your shampoo and conditioner game. Whether you’re traveling and buying the cheapest shampoo or conditioner, add some oil to help invigorate your scalp. Or if you’re wanting to spice up your normal hair routine, add some diluted oil straight to your scalp and hair.
It will leave your hair feeling strong, warm and tingly, with a sweet and spicy kind of smell.

6. Stimulates scalp
Not only will the ginger add sweet smell to those luscious locks, it also can help stimulate your scalp. I often switch between adding ginger, peppermint and tea tree oil to my conditioner to help strengthen the scalp and lengthen the hair.
7. Lightens and clears blemishes
Grab your favorite skincare product, and then add a few drops of ginger to harness its powerful effects. Put it in face lotion, body lotion, toner, etc. Just make sure to properly dilute the oil, and test it in a small area of skin first. It’s anti-inflammatory properties are a natural way to help support beautiful skin and clear blemishes.
8. Helps with fat burn
Level up your hydration game by incorporating some ginger into your water. Use fresh ginger in water, or drink ginger tea. Research shows adding ginger to your water may help you stay better hydrated, supports appetite suppression and may support efforts with weight loss.
Mix and match with a variety of fruits and spices — lemon, orange, cucumber, cinnamon, mint — to bring your water to life.
9. Helps with workout recovery
Feeling sore after a full body workout is one of the best feelings — pause to let in the applause of you challenging yourself. After your workout, sweaty yoga session, or intense hiking adventure, consider adding some of the oil to your post-workout care regiment.
Once you shower, add a few drops of oil into lotion as a natural muscle relaxer and gently rub it in. Make sure to properly dilute it first, then hone in on those sore muscles you just worked to relax them.
10. Eases arthritis or joint pain
Create your own muscle rub by adding ginger root oil to your favorite lotion. Properly dilute the oil, then gently rub the newly made concoction over the joints and areas that hurt.
11. Take a bath with ginger oil
Before you turn off that running bath water for self-care Sunday, consider adding some oil into the bathtub. Whether you’re traveling and sulking in an Airbnb bathtub in Ibiza, Spain, or lounging in your cozy tub at-home, ginger adds another level of relaxation and warm comfort to your bath.
