Despite Malta’s small size, this beautiful island is a treasure trove of historic landscapes, tasty Maltese foods, and gorgeous stays. Featuring coastal getaways with tranquil views of the Mediterranean Sea, Airbnbs lodged near notable landmarks, and charming cityscapes with brightly colored window panes and doors, Malta is incredible. That being said, it’s important to pick your Airbnb in Malta carefully so you can make the most of your stay.

We stayed in Malta during the spring before jetting off to Cyprus and we fell in love with this city! From wandering the grand descending staircase on St. Lucy’s Street, to grabbing a sunset meal beneath the twinkle lights, to enjoying the live music that bounced through Strait Street — wherever you stay it’s bound to be a memorable experience.

So, lets take a closer look. Listed below you’ll find a lineup of beautiful Malta Airbnbs. Keep in mind they’re listed in no particular order.

Sidenote: Did you get your travel insurance? Don’t forget to buy your insurance right after you buy your plane ticket. This will insurance both your trip and health are insured (and safe) before your coastal getaway!

Typical prices for an Airbnb in Malta

A view of the Grand Harbor from the Upper Barrakka Gardens
This is the famous Upper Barrakka Gardens with gorgeous views of the harbor. During certain times these cannons are even fired.

You’ll find prices starting as low as $60 per night for affordable stays all the way to $300 per night for luxury accommodations. It really depends on what you’re looking for. We’ve personally stayed on both ends of the spectrum, but we love a good deal. And, a fully equipped kitchen.

It’s important to note, some of these prices may vary depending on where your accommodations are located. For instance, bigger cities like Valletta have wider price ranges than smaller cities. And, they have more vacation rentals to choose from.

While Malta is more expensive than traveling through Eastern Europe (i.e. Romania, Bulgaria, etc.), the prices are still reasonable. I’ve found it to be much cheaper than traveling to London, Switzerland, Barcelona, and many other major European cities.

So no matter where your accommodations are in Malta, you’ll likely score a pretty good deal.

Best cities to stay in Malta

When it comes to booking a Malta Airbnb, I highly suggest booking based on what you plan on doing. Or, based on what type of vacation you’re craving.

Evan and I found that these cities listed below each had certain aesthetics and vibes. For example, if you’re a history buff, Valletta will be screaming come stay here! But if you’re a Game of Thrones fanatic, well there’s another city that will catch your eye. Enter Mdina.

Valletta

An airbnb in Malta
the gardens in Valletta
On the left you’ll find a historic home with colorful Maltese balconies. On the right is another view of the Upper Barrakka Gardens.

The capital of Malta is Valletta. It’s by far our favorite city to stay in Malta because there’s so much to do, like nibble on homemade foods, explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and eat some more! Clearly, we’re foodies. If you’re a foodie too, here’s some excellent restaurants in Valletta to chow down at.

Beyond being close to tasty Maltese foods, Valletta is right by the water. Meaning your Airbnb can also have a seaside view if you wish. This goes for UNESCO World Heritage Sites, museums, and more.

For nightlife lovers, Valletta also takes the cake as the best location to stay at.

Birgu

Malta has three fortified cities that are extremely famous — Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua. Known as the “Three Cities”, these areas are the backbone of Maltese history. To this day, these cities still provide homes to the Maltese people.

Birgu (formerly know as Vittoriosa) is another great place to find a beautiful accommodation in Malta. It’s also one of the oldest cities in the country.

If you’re staying here you’re bound to get gorgeous views of the sea and some stunning architecture. It’s also extremely close to Valletta.

Mdina

the Mdina Fortress
a church in Mdina
On left is the famous Mdina Gate and on the right is the church in Mdina.

Did someone say Game of Thrones? Yup, you read that right. If you love Game of Thrones and want a mother of dragons type experience, then you’ll love booking a rental in (or nearby) this medieval city.

I’m not promising that your rentals will be loaded with GOT themed decor, but if you’re staying in this city, you’ll likely be walking distance away from the Mdina Fortress.

Remember the scene when Lady Catelyn Stark rode into King’s Landing to find her beloved husband Ned Stark? She was accompanied by Ser Rodrick Cassel. Once they reached the gate, two guards met them. Well, that’s the Mdina Gate. It was in Season 1, Episode 3 of “Game of Thrones”.

On top of the beautiful architecture, Mdina is awfully romantic at night. It has bistros and eateries quietly sitting around every nook and cranny begging to be explored.

Rabat

Right outside of Mdina is Rabat. It’s also an inland city that’s worth a visit as both Mdina and Rabat combined made up the former Malta capital, Melita. This was during the Roman era.

Nevertheless, Rabat has it’s own charm with lovely medieval architecture and eateries. While Mdina is still the biggest attraction, this is also a nice place to stay.

Saint Paul’s Bay

a sunset view of the harbor

For those craving a bedroom apartment rental with charming beach vibes, St. Paul’s Bay wins this round. Even though the ocean can be seen from various cities in Malta, very few cities have sandy beaches. Luckily, St. Paul’s Bay is one of those!

That being said, it has the best beaches on the island. They’re also the most popular.

Plus, it also rivals Valletta’s nightlife so you’ll likely find some amazing bars, lounges, and clubs such as Velvet Lounge Club or Cafe Del Mar.

So, if you’re craving sand between the crevices of your toes you’ll find great choices here for an Airbnb in Malta.

Luxurious Airbnb in Malta with a panoramic view of the harbor

Location: Saint Paul’s Bay

a luxurious Airbnb in Malta

Since we ended with Saint Paul’s Bay as being one of the best cities to stay in, lets start with an Airbnb here. Chic vibes on the top floor, with a large private patio — sign us up!

This waterfront Airbnb in Malta is a luxurious studio that features spectacular views of the harbor and fishing village. Eat breakfast on the patio, get your morning workout in, and relax in this beautiful setting.

This location is walking distance from the beach with many other well-known beaches close by. You’ll also find several coffee shops, restaurants, and some parks if you fancy a midday stroll.

What’s more is this Airbnb has a fully equipped kitchen, so it’s excellent for whipping up quick and yummy Airbnb meals. There’s also air conditioning, WIFI, a washing machine, and more. So whether you’re on a work-cation, romantic getaway, or adventuring solo, this place has it all.

More about the listing can be found here.

Modern vacation rental near the sea

Location: San Pawl il-Baħar (near Saint Paul’s Bay)

a modern airbnb in Malta near the sea

This brand new rental is also located in San Pawl il-Baħar near Saint Paul’s Bay, which means it’s by the sea! It’s beautifully decorated with accents of yellow throughout this spacious modern apartment. The kitchen is fully equipped for all your cooking joys. It also has air conditioning (which is coin based, so it may be an added fee depending on usage), WIFI, a balcony, and a washer.

But what I love about this apartment is that it’s long-term stay approved and it has luggage drop of. That means no more lugging your luggage around after a morning flight before you’re able to check in. Tell me I’m not the only person this happens too!

With that in mind, this Malta Airbnb is a one bedroom rental that’s great for long stay travelers, and couple travel. It’s also great for family travel as you’ll find high chairs and travel cribs to use.

Nearby there’s a supermarket, restaurants, bars, and bus depot so you can visit other cities on the island like Valletta.

Family friendly villa with a historic vibe

Location: Manikata

luxury airbnb in Malta

This waterfront Maltese house is a lovely Airbnb meant for family getaways and friend-cations. With 3-bedrooms and 4 beds, it can easily (and comfortably) fit 6 people.

Inside, expect to be blown away by the architecture, as this Manikata Airbnb is over 350 years old. Imagine an ancient design meeting luxury modern decor and amenities, and wallah! In every detail you can truly feel the Maltese love, joy, and culture.

There’s WIFI, fully equipped kitchen, nearby beach access, balcony, and a grill. It even has wellness features for wellness travelers such as a private hot tub and gym. Staying here will make for a truly unique experience.

So if you’re looking to turn up with your family and friends for the summer, this is the perfect place for grilling and chilling. Not to mention, the host is a superhost.

Read here for more information.

Enchanting fairy tale Airbnb in Malta

Location: Rabat

an enchanting windmill Airbnb in Malta

If you’re looking for another truly unique stay, this Malta Airbnb is a hidden gem. It’s got the whole “look ma, I’m in a living in windmill” kind of vibe. But, how? Because you’re actually staying in a 300 year old windmill that was converted into a Maltese home with colorful accents and rustic finishes. It’s almost like your staying in an enchanting fairy tale.

Inside there’s a full kitchen, WIFI, a washer, and a sun terrace for lounging. There’s even a fire place great for those cozy winter nights.

This 2-bedroom home is located in the heart of Rabat, which is just next door to Mdina. In less than 10 minutes you can find yourself staring at the Mdina Fortress, reminiscing about the GOAT show, Game of Thrones.

Nearby, you’ll also find charming cafes, cute wine bars, and shops which is about a 2 minute walk away.

Moreover, this location is great for couple retreats, solo adventurers, and intimate family/friend travels. More about the listing can be found here.

Spacious Maltese house in The Three Cities

Location: Birgu

a spacious and historic Airbnb in Birgu, Malta

This Airbnb in Malta is specifically located in Birgu (Vittoriosa) — one of The Three Cities. Personally this was our favorite area to stay in because you’re right by the harbor and close to the capital Valletta. You can even take a ferry from Birgu to Valletta which cost about 2 Euros and takes 10 minutes to cross the harbor.

Nevertheless, this house has 3-bedrooms and can fit up to 6 guests. Even furry friends are allowed here! Talk about the best summer house.

This Airbnb is also extremely family friendly (i.e. kid toys, cribs, etc.). There’s WIFI, a grill, full kitchen, waterfront access, and a window AC unit. And for the wellness travelers, there’s also resort access, an outdoor patio, and long stays are welcome. Just be sure to double check these with the host and click here for more information.

That being said this is excellent for families, friends trips, working remotely, and snuggling up with your fur babies.

Cozy 2-bedroom Airbnb in Malta in a lively neighborhood

Location: Valletta

An Airbnb located in downtown Valletta, Malta

Strait Street is one of my favorite streets in Malta. Known for being a vibrant street, this area is bustling with great nightlife, eateries, bars, and local shops. And this cozy apartment is located on that street, in the heart of the tourist area in Valletta.

This contemporary 2-bedroom Airbnb in Malta is run by a very highly rated superhost. Equipped with a kitchen, traditional wooden balcony that’s enclosed, WIFI, air conditioning, and more — you’ll find all the essential you need.

It’s also walking distance from The Palace and Saint George’s Square which makes it super easy to explore monuments in the capital. The property also has a private entrance and onsite free parking. Read more about this lovely holiday apartment here.

Vintage Airbnb in Malta with harbor views

Location: Valletta

a vintage Airbnb in Malta with a rooftop terrace

This vintage accommodation in Malta dates back to the early 1700s. According to the highly rated superhost, this studio was renovated in 2015 keeping its historic bones, but adding ultramodern yet vintage finishes.

Because of its design, this Airbnb in Malta is extremely warm and sunny. It’s located in a popular area in Valletta as it’s quite close to restaurants, bars, museums, the beach, and local shops.

On top of that, this 1-bedroom studio offers scenic views of the harbor and it has a dedicated workspace for anyone needing to tackle some work before heading out for the day. Or if you’re like me, you can use this space to get a quick yoga flow in too. Downward dog never felt so good abroad.

There’s a rooftop balcony, WIFI, air conditioning, tons of parking, and of course, a kitchen gadgets to bring out that inner chef. More information can be found here.

Boutique luxury townhouse in downtown Valletta

Location: Valletta

a historic luxury Airbnb in Malta

This Malta Airbnb is gorgeous with its high vaulted ceilings. Upon entering it has a small staircase that caters to its peaceful yet romantic getaway ambiance. Just minutes away from UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this place is a dream for history buffs. Not just for it’s location, but for its architecture too.

Inside you’ll find a restored Maltese stone home and a brand new Maltese balcony. (You know, the brightly colored ones you see throughout the city!) Well, this place has one.

What’s more is this Airbnb has a private entrance, luggage drop off, full kitchen, and beach essentials for those planning a beach day.

It’s close to the Grand Harbour, Grand Harbour Bridge, the Great Siege Bell, and Merchant Street where you’ll find ample amounts of eateries, cafes, and more. This places comes with excellent reviews and praises reports as the owner is a superhost. Click here to learn more about this place.

A historic and intimate fortress home in Mdina

Location: Mdina

A historic and intimate Airbnb in Malta

Do you want to stay in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage fortress with winding sandstone alleys? If you’re screaming yes that’s me, this place will have you truly living out your Game of Thrones moment in real time. The Airbnb is a 12th century home that also has the comforts of modern day life.

This tiny yet mighty stay in the center of Mdina offers a glimpse into the ancient life of this fortress city. While the kitchen is small, it’s also mighty and has everything you need to make a delicious meal. (If you need some meal inspirations for cooking in a tiny kitchen, read this post.)

Did I mention this stay is also located near a grocery truck? That means instead of going to the grocery store, you can buy your bread and milk straight from this truck. It parks in the city square every day except Sunday.

With a 4.92 rating and more than 200 reviews on Airbnb, this superhost provides an amazing place to stay. Click here for more information.

This Airbnb in Malta was made for couple escapades, long stays, and solo pursuits. Located in the heart of Birgu (Vittoriosa), this charming 1-bedroom apartment features stunning views of the historical Grand Harbor. Kiss the rosy sunset goodbye through your window or head up to the roof top terrace for jaw dropping views.

But if you’re craving an even more relaxing sunset experience, climb into the hot tub! While it’s shared with other apartments, you’ll likely encounter no visitors as you soak.

In addition this apartment has all the essentials you need — WIFI, a full kitchen, luggage drop off, air conditioning, and more. Keep in mind it doesn’t have a washing machine.
