Spending the holidays in Romania’s region of Transylvania, can be a breathtaking experience. This region is filled with giant mythical forests, mountainous terrain, and castles such as the infamous Dracula’s Castle (a legend about a blood thirsty vampire). While this folklore has bought tremendous fame to this castle, Castle Bran, Transylvania further offers enchanting Romanian Christmas markets for a Transylvania holiday, hearty soups and stews, and friendly faces spreading holiday cheer.
Situated in central Romania, this territory is adobe to the Southern Carpathian Mountains and diverse undisturbed woods. Other dwellings include medieval towns, the Black Church, and several small villages. Aside from the rich landscape, Transylvania generates the highest numbers of tourism in Romania and only continues to climb over the years (source).
Previously, Evan and I spent almost a month exploring numerous cities in Romania. We traveled slowly to experience the breathtaking wonders of Christmas in Europe, seeking out all the best fairytale Christmas markets.

While Transylvania holidays offer an abundance of exploration, here are a couple of photos to help you step into the heartland of Transylvania. Witness photos from Timisoara, the European Capital of Culture for 2021, Brasov, and our day trip to Castle Bran.
Additionally, there are photos from Cluj-Napoca, a metropolitan university town, and Sibiu, a charming town with one of the best Christmas markets in Romania. Lastly, there are a couple of photos from villages along the way.
Christmas Markets in Romania
Romania hosts several European Christmas markets during the holidays. Some are located in bigger cities like Cluj-Napoca, while others are beautifully lodged in quant small towns such as Sibiu. In fact, Sibiu moderates one of the biggest markets in Romania. It’s complete with a giant Ferris Wheel, large ice skating rink and various other winter festivities.
Besides family friendly activities, you’ll find traditional Romanian food ranging from slow roasted pork specialties to vegetarian options. Delve stomach first into a dish of sarmale (generously stuffed cabbage rolls), hot polenta, or indulge in a glass of palinka.
While there are options for vegans/vegetarians, the food in Romanian Christmas markets do lean more towards a meat-eaters paradise. However, if you’re traveling with food allergies, or preferences see this guide — traveling with food allergies.
Stay bundled as you tour the festive decorated wooden huts brimming with traditional Romanian clothing, handmade ornaments, and other artisanal products. You might even hear Romanian Christmas carols being sung around the market. Historians claim these carols have been around since the 4th century.
Ultimately, each Christmas market in Romania offers a unique experience. With some cities comprised of stunning medieval architecture, while others are enticing food havens. Drink loads of plum flavored mulled wine, explore the fairytale scenery and stay bundled as you plan your Transylvania itinerary.

If I didn’t already want to visit Romania this really seals the deal. It looks so good, especially in winter. I love Christmas markets so that would be perfect. Glad to know there are at least a few veggie options, even if I’m surviving on sweets some days

Also, I secretly survive on sweets too haha — they’re just too good! Especially during the holidays. 🙂
